In this westward-facing landscape painting, lies the cool, crisp days of a Northern California region as the cloudy day sets the mood. The bronzy foliage of the trees along the west banks of the Sacramento River compliments the swirling river brush that encapsulates the 10- story stepped pyramidal office building of The Ziggurat, the city’s iconic landmark (once known as The Money Store). The use of highlights along the riverbank creates reflections of the brutalist style architectural building. As the sun begins to set, the low-lying light casts long shadows and creates a golden hour effect with reflections mirroring the sky and surrounding landscape.
This plein-air style painting is based on a photo taken on the east banks of old town and pays homage to Mr. Edwin Kado, a longtime friend of ACC and renowned Sacramento Architect.

The Ziggurat Architect Ed Kado describes the building as follows:

“I originally designed a building that cantilevered toward the river, so it was a pyramid upside down. It was twelve stories, and when you got to the top floor, it was 120 feet toward the river. The president of The Money Store thought it was interesting, but he wanted a symmetrical building, So, I suggested this shape as it connotes stability.”

This is permanently placed at ACC’s Mapletree Village to honor the renowned architect and ACC’s 2025 prestigious Honoree. Kado is known as ACC’s $1.4M man as he designed Maple Tree Village, which opened in 2019, and the renovated Park City now the location of Meals on Wheels by ACC offices. In addition, he designed assisted living units for ACC and classroom and office space at the ACC Campus Office. As a successful Sacramento architect, he also designed other well-known buildings such as Union Bank, Almond Growers visitor center, CSU Sacramento schools, Crossroads shopping center and Otos Marketplace and Mahoroba Japanese Bakery.
